Congress approves Mexican border fence

Thursday, September 14, 2006

The U.S. House of Representatives approved the building of 700 miles of double-layered fence between the U.S. and Mexico this afternoon, it was the second time in a year that the issue was before the congress and the bill passed by a 238–138 vote. The 2000 mile long border currently has 75 miles of fencing.

The bill also orders the U.S. Homeland Security Department to take over control of the border in 18 months and grants border agents new authority to stop fleeing vehicles.

It also ordered the Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff to conduct a study of the necessity and feasibility of the construction of a “state-of-the-art barrier system” along the Canadian border.

Business Etiquette Major Shortage on the Fashion Police Force

There it was! The perfect outfit Id been looking for to wear when I go on my cruise to the Bahamas. A metallic crop-top cami, a floaty sheer chiffon tiered skirt, strappy stiletto sandals, lots and lots of bangle bracelets, and enough stringed beads to be the envy of any fortune teller. Where did I see this? Not on a runway. Not in the pages of Elle. Not on the hot fashion trends segment of Today. No, this little number was courtesy of an intern on her way to a business briefing.

I thought she might be auditioning for a part in Carmen after work, but not so. Apparently she sees each new day as an opportunity to dazzle her bosses and coworkers with her fashion savvy. Someone desperately needs to tell this young woman that unless she signs a major recording contract or plans to start reading palms full time, she should forget about setting trends and focus instead on developing a professional image.

In my completely subjective opinion, the end of civilization as we knew it started when people began wearing athletic shoes and sweats at work. Okay, so jogging or walking midday is healthier than gorging on nachos and Ho-Hos at a desk, but did anyone else notice that even those who werent exercising during lunch started to wear Reeboks with business attire? While I dont doubt that some people were genuinely intent on improving their health by moving more and eating less, plenty either liked the comfort of such clothes or they were trying to convince themselves and others that they were actually getting buff by just dressing the part.

This was the first chink in the wall of decorum, and from what Ive seen recently, that walls about ready to come a-tumblin down. Consider the establishment of Casual Friday in so many businessesclearly linked to bringing the gym into the workplace. Now employees are trying to bring the weekend into the workplace as well. What is the thinking behind this trend? Is this a subtle indication that we are buying in to the idea of a four-day work week? Is this in some way supposed to appease disgruntled employees?

Even if it started out to be some sort of perk, dressing down at the end of the week has been twisted beyond recognition. This is proof of that old expression: Give em an inch, and theyll eat the whole enchilada. Warm weather makes the situation even worse.

Granted, we expect to see more flesh in the summer than at any other time of the year. Wherever people choose to take a break from work and rising temperatures (the beach, a park, mountain trails), we arent shocked by the sight of bare arms, legs, backs, midriffs, or feet. We can even understand a more pared down approach to dressing in the workplace when temperatures soar, but even so, overexposure and lack of discretion have reached epidemic proportions. Where are the fashion police when you need them?

Just because its hot, this is no reason to ditch your duds or common sense as you head off to work. Most indoor workplaces are air conditioned these days, so its not as though youll be putting in time at a sauna, unless thats where you work. If that is where you work, then you can stop reading now. For the rest of you, keep going.

Many of you probably had mothers or grandmothers who advised you to always wear clean and intact undies when you left home, just in case you got hit by a bus and had to be whisked off to an emergency room somewhere. The presumption was that you actually would be wearing something over your unmentionables. Apparently that part of the message got lost in recent years. Consider the popularity of such items as camisoles, belly shirts, halter tops, and miniskirts. While these are fine away from work, they are not okay at workever!

So who is to blame for the fashion crimes that abound in workplaces today? From what Ive been able to tell, the fault lies with two entities: 1) employers who have let the ponies out of the starting gate and cant corral them back in, and 2) employees who have never heard of dressing for success. Here are a few tips for both sides.

For Supervisors

– If your organization has no dress code, establish one.

– If your organization has one, enforce it.

– Set the standard by being compliant yourself.

– You are your employees supervisors, not their pals. Speak up when your sensibilities are assaulted.

– If all else fails, send employees home who are inappropriately dressed for your workplace.

For Employees

– Know your organizations dress policy.

– When in doubt, stray on the side of conservatism.

– If you hope to advance in your organization, emulate the style of those whose -positions you would like to have.

– If you expect to be treated professionally, look professionaleven on Casual Friday.

– Use common sense and realize that the media sell trends and not necessarily good taste.

Obviously the standards will vary from one workplace to another. If you work for an organization that requires wearing a uniform, you can quit reading now. If you work for a business that is nontraditional and rather laissez-faire where work attire is concerned, you can stop too. For the rest of you who work in places that have established rules that can be misinterpreted or pushed to the limits, stop and look in the mirror before you leave home. Ask yourself: Does what I have on reflect the image my business wants its clients or customers to see?

Im not suggesting you need to be unduly formal. After all, evening wear in the workplace would be just as inappropriate as a thong bathing suit. Somewhere between these two extremes is a happy medium that will allow you to do your job and look professional. In the meantime, dont rely on fashion or style magazines to determine what is appropriate for your workplace. Save the trendy items for your hours away from workno ifs, ands, butts, or bellies about it!

Medical Spa: Reduce The Appearance Of Scars In Time For Summer

Submitted by: Abigail Aaronson

Scars-they usually a reminder of some traumatic event that you just as soon forget if you could. But, they can elicit all kinds of memories, bad and good. The question is do you really need a reminder? You remember tripping up the stairs in those high heels just fine-you don’t need to look at your shin and see the proof nor do you want to look at your face and be reminded of your teenage acne days.

With summertime coming, the shorts, tank tops and bathing suits will be out of the closet soon and you feel a little self-conscious about the scar. Wherever your little reminder is, laser scar removal at the medical spa can reduce the appearance or completely remove your unsightly scar in time for summer.

This process can get rid of or reduce the appearance of all kinds of scars-acne, keloids, burns, stretch marks, incision scars as well as injury scars. There are a couple of different lasers that are used. Skin resurfacing lasers like the CO2 and the Erbium laser both work well on acne while the pulsed dyed laser reduces the appearance of keloids and milder raised scars.

Basically what these lasers do is vaporize or kill the skin of the treated area. As this skin dies, it flakes or peels off to expose the healthy new skin underneath. The procedure can be done under local and as an outpatient procedure. There will some discomfort as the skin heals regenerates.

You medical spa physician will make sure you have the ointments, antibiotics and pain medication if necessary. Depending on how visible the scar area is with clothes on, you don’t have to take any time off of work or school.

Depending on how healthy you are and the normal healing abilities of your body, within four days, you should see the effects of skin repair. It is important to remember that there is no guarantee that the scar will be completely removed.

For instance, a severe keloid may require several treatments and still be visible, though greatly reduced. More superficial scars can be removed or very hard to detect after treatment. After about two months, your medical spa physician will want to see you to evaluate the results and you can decide if you want additional treatment.

So, if you have a scar that keeps you from feeling comfortable in tank tops, bathing suits or shorts, think about laser scar removal at a medical spa. Make sure it is a certified medical professional who is using this equipment as there are risks involved. Typically, a physician or a dermatologist will perform the procedure. During your consultation, he will evaluate your scar and determine the best mode of treatment for the results you want.

There’s no reason for you to be ashamed or self-conscious about your body when there is something you can do about it. You’ll always remember how you got that scar you don’t need a constant visible reminder. Laser scar removal at a medical spa can free you from your little memento.

Kennedy Center names 2007 honors recipients

Friday, September 14, 2007

The Kennedy Center announced that its 30th presentation of the Kennedy Center Honors would go to pianist Leon Fleisher, comedian Steve Martin, singer Diana Ross, director Martin Scorsese and musician Brian Wilson. The Center was opened to the public in 1971 and was envisioned as part of the National Cultural Center Act, which mandated that the independent, privately-funded institution would present a wide variety of both classical and contemporary performances, commission the creation of new artistic works, and undertake a variety of educational missions to increase awareness of the arts.

In a statement, Kennedy Center Chairman Stephen A. Schwarzman said that “with their extraordinary talent, creativity and perseverance, the five 2007 honorees have transformed the way we, as Americans, see, hear and feel the performing arts.”

Fleisher, 79, a member of the Peabody Institute‘s music faculty, is a pianist who lost use of his right hand in 1965 due to a neurological condition. He became an accomplished musician and conductor through the use of his left hand. At 67, he regained the use of his right hand. With the advent of Botox therapy, he was once more able to undertake two-hand performances in 2004, his first in four decades. “I’m very gratified by the fact that it’s an apolitical honor,” Fleisher said. “It is given by colleagues and professional people who are aware of what [an artist] has done, so it really is apolitical — and that much more of an honor.”

Martin, 62, a comedian who has written books and essays in addition to his acting and stand-up comedy career, rose to fame during his work on the American television program Saturday Night Live in the 1970’s. Schwarzman praised his work as that of a “renaissance comic whose talents wipe out the boundaries between artistic disciplines.” Martin responded to the honor saying, “I am grateful to the Kennedy Center for finally alleviating in me years of covetousness and trophy envy.”

Ross, 63, was a product of Detroit‘s Brewster-Douglass Projects when as a teeager she and friends Mary Wilson and Florence Ballardis formed The Supremes, a ground-breaking Motown act. She portrayed singer Billie Holiday in the 1972 film Lady Sings the Blues, which earned her an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe award. “Diana Ross’ singular, instantly recognizable voice has spread romance and joy throughout the world,” said Schwarzman. Ross said she was “taken aback. It is a huge, huge honor and I am excited to be in this class of people.”

Scorsese, 64, is one of the most accomplished directors the United States ever produced, whose work includes Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, GoodFellas, Cape Fear, The Last Temptation of Christ and The Departed, for which he won a 2006 Academy Award for Best Director after being nominated eight times. Scorsese said, “I’m very honored to be receiving this recognition from the Kennedy Center and proud to be joining the company of the very distinguished individuals who have received this honor in years past.”

Wilson, 65, along with his brothers Dennis and Carl, formed the Beach Boys in 1961. They had a series of hits that included “Surfin’ U.S.A.” and “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.” Their 1966 album Pet Sounds is considered one of the most influential recordings in American music. “This is something so unexpected and I feel extremely fortunate to be in the company of such great artists,” said Wilson, who is currently on tour.

The Kennedy Center’s board of trustees is responsible for selecting honorees for “lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts.” Previous honorees, including Elton John and Steven Spielberg, also submitted recommendations. A wide variety of people were under consideration, including Emanuel Ax, Evgeny Kissin, Renee Fleming, Laurence Fishburne, Francis Ford Coppola, Melissa Etheridge and Kenny Chesney.

President Bush and first lady Laura Bush will attend the center’s presentation at its opera house on December 2, 2007, which will broadcast on December 26 on CBS.

Excavators For Sale, Used, Off Lease And Repos, Updated Bank And Lender Repos

Excavators For Sale, Used, Off Lease and Repos, Updated Bank and Lender Repos

by

J.M Casa

Excavators are for sale, used, can be originate in the secondary repo and off lease markets from financial institutions looking to liquidate and finance their inventories. A struggling economy has caused numerous clients to be in non-payment of their financial deal and/or brought back their excavators at the end of the lease without taking title to it for economic reasons. With the unemployment rate high and new contracts not plentiful, this has produced a buying and banking opportunity for several start up and seasoned businesses.

Due to a contracting economy, countless banks have excess excavator inventories that they want to place back on the street. These in-house inventories are non income producing, therefore putting anxiety on the financial institution to make a deal with the consumer. These opportunities can be originate in the price, the financing or a combination of both. The lender has taken these excavators, and/or equipment back and must refurbish these excavators as quickly as possible and either re-lease or resell them. The bank will either advertise their listing through their internal sales force or outside professionals such as brokers to move their inventories as swift asworkable. From period to time as these inventories either sit or anything reason isn’t moving, the financial institution may perhaps place these items up for auction Several of the ways the startup and/or seasoned business can find these opportunities are through trade publications, surfing internet search engines, contacting lease brokers for information and speaking to banks directly Several of the financial institutions in the market have advertised personal credit qualifications.as minimal as 550, earlier bankruptcy regulations amended or unobserved and startups wanted. One of our banks only need a signed and dated lease application and the summary page of your last three months business and/or personal bank statements. Therefore this lender doesn’t want a thorough documentation package. This financial institution will deal with the applicants abilty to generate a income base to assume this debt obligation. This bank furthermore works with start ups as well.. These excavators are manufactured by Caterpillar, Case, Hitachi, Kobelco etc Cash buyers have the best opportunity to get the greatest discounted cost, dealers and wholesalers are wanted. Happy hunting for your repossessed, off lease excavator and its related financing.

J.M Luna has over thirty years experience in the financial field. This includes leasing, accounting and taxes, hard asset money and commercial lending.

New Zealand’s South Island and southern North Island struck by storms

Monday, January 2, 2006

New Zealand’s warm sunny New Year’s weather has come to a sudden end as gale force winds and rain assault southern New Zealand.

In parts of the South Island New Year campers have finished their holiday early as winds averaging 120km/h (75 m/h), gusting at times up to 180km/h (112 m/h), have blown in.

Power went out to 1300 homes in the capital city Wellington; flights were grounded at the airport, with incoming flights diverted to Palmerston North airport.

“The North Island will also be affected by the low,” says MetService forecaster Michael Short, “with heavy rain around the Tararua Ranges and Mt Taranaki.”

The MetService has issued severe weather warnings for most of the South Island and the southern portion of the North Island; bad weather is also forecasted throughout the rest of the country.

The MetService says to expect bad weather for the next 10 days as a deepening low moves south of Stewart Island, but a flow of westerly winds is expected to stay put all week.

Holiday makers have been asked by MetService to review their holiday plans and keep up to date with the latest weather.

Gordon Brown announces new powers for UK Treasury

Tuesday, October 10, 2006

Gordon Brown, Chancellor of the Exchequer, announced today that an Order in Council will be made tomorrow empowering the British Treasury to prevent the funding of those suspected of planning terror. Use will be made of forensic accounting and of methods similar to those employed by the code breakers at Bletchley Park. With the help of computing power to discover relations between bits of information, they cracked the German Enigma code during WWII. Gordon Brown ranks the impact of forensic accounting at the present time with the use of fingerprinting in the 19th century and of DNA in the late 20th Century.

Speaking to Chatham House, The Royal Institute of International Affairs, Brown defined the most dangerous sources of finance for terrorists as being charities, money service businesses and financial transactions such as bureaux de change, cheque cashers and money remitters. There will be a new licensing system requiring firms to keep more detailed records of transactions. Tougher action against non-compliance is promised. New proposals about money laundering are being prepared.

The new Order will empower the Treasury, for the first time, to use closed source evidence from classified intelligence to freeze the assets of suspects. A special advocate procedure will be put in place to ensure “fair and consistent hearing of cases”. If evidence shows it to be necessary, it is Brown’s opinion that suspects should be held, without a charge being brought, for more than the present 28 days.

The Government has been defeated once already in Parliament in an attempt, in the Terrorism Act 2006, to increase the present 28 days of detention without charge to 90 days. Public opinion was very divided on that proposal and feelings in Parliament ran high with talk of a police state and of the Government pandering to public opinion.
